This is the story of such a summers day at a time when the graces of companionship had wonderful rules of behaviour. A ladies reputation was her precious possession even if hidden passions might betray her should she weaken for just a moment. The homes had marble terrace walks that opened into lush gardens shaded with many trees and shrubs. It is toward evening and a late afternoon luncheon was just served. The parlor orchestra began to play waltzes, and two steps, with an occasional polka just for fun. Couples twirled and danced, with full hoop skirts flying. Men wore white gloves to keep from staining a beautiful gown of soft silk and lace. High starched collars or soft silken shirts were worn by the men with plum colored long coats and buff colored trousers, snug fitting topped paten leather shoes of the softest leather.
